Terracotta Horse
A horse is represented by an animal which symbolizes energy and movement. Even though elephants are also carved by the craftsmen or karigars of Rajagram, Sonamukhi and Hamirpur but the horse has got more prominence and popularity. When it comes to handicraft you must have heard Bankura Terracotta Horse , Panchmura Terracotta Horse & India Terracotta Horse.
Terracotta Horse - A heritage from the soil of Bengal
Bankura Horse was initially used at village rituals as a symbolic sacrifice to appease village Dharmathakur who is also believed to be a form of Hindu God Surya rides on a seven-horse chariot, for fulfillment of wishes. The horses stand tall and erect with lively long ears wearing the Chandmala on the forehead.
Making Process of Terracotta Horse
They use a tool called the ucha, a semi circular piece of bamboo to make the Terracotta Horses. Balya is a stone tool & pitna is a wooden beater. These are used for beating. To decorate the figures they use Bamboo Chiari, potters wheel and kiln. Then the parts of the horse or elephant are made separately on the wheel and joined later. The ears and tails are made specially in moulds and fixed on the body on grooves for better accuracy. The figures are kept to dry a bit in the sun, then kept inside to dry fully and again heated outside and then the figures are colored with natural colors.
Though Bankura horse has been part of households all across the globe, the artisans who have been making it for generations are struggling to survive. A visit to the Bankura’s Panchmura Village narrates the saddening story of Bankura artisans. Panchmura Terracotta Horse & Bankura Terracotta Horse is mainly similar but has some differences in the design. Even after being recognized by so many artists struggle to earn there lunch. So no matter how many times you see terracotta horses in a logo don’t overlook it gift a pair, & make uncles from Jaipur & as well Bankura happy.
